Finishing works are priced in several different ways, and understanding them is essential to comparing quotes fairly. Opaque pricing is a major source of arguments and of surprise extras later in the project.
Per square metre or per item
Some works are priced per square metre (flooring, paint) and others per unit or item (an electrical point, a door). A detailed bill of quantities lists each one, so it is clear exactly what you are paying for.
What is included and what is not
Verify what the price covers: materials, demolition, waste removal and cleaning. A quote that looks cheap but excludes these turns out to be more expensive. Ask for a full breakdown before signing.
How to compare quotes
Compare quotes on the basis of exactly the same specification, not only on the bottom line. A detailed, transparent quote is worth more than a low, vague one.
