Structural construction is the stage that determines the stability of the building for its entire life. The structure comprises the foundations, concrete pours, columns and beams, slabs and load-bearing walls. Precise execution, in accordance with the structural engineer's drawings and the Israeli standard, is the basis for everything that follows – from the envelope to the finishing works.

Stages of structural construction

  1. Soil investigation and excavation – a geotechnical consultant determines the appropriate foundation type. Weak soil, rock or a high water table completely change the foundation stage and its cost.
  2. Pouring foundations – pad foundations, strip foundations or a concrete raft, following the soil investigation and the engineer's design.
  3. Columns and beams – erecting the vertical structure, with steel reinforcement to the drawings and dimensional checks at every stage.
  4. Pouring slabs – floor by floor, including sleeves and openings for building services.
  5. Block wallsstraight, level construction that saves hours of work at the finishing stage.

Every pour includes steel reinforcement to the drawings, vibration to prevent air voids, and correct curing of the concrete. Accuracy here prevents deviations that surface late and are very expensive to correct.

What we check in the structure

  • Laboratory testing of concrete – samples from every pour to verify the strength matches the design.
  • Reinforcement inspection before pouring – bar diameter, spacing and concrete cover are checked against the drawings before pouring. After the pour nothing can be corrected.
  • Measurement and levelling – column verticality, slab levels and opening dimensions.
  • Preparation for services – sleeves for plumbing, electrics and air conditioning. A forgotten sleeve means coring through existing concrete later.

A straight, level structure saves work in levelling walls, drywall and flooring. A deviation of a few centimetres in the structure translates into unnecessary hours and materials at the finishing stage. How long does structural construction take?

For an average private house, the structure usually takes three to six months, depending on size, number of storeys, foundation type and weather. Pours require curing time that cannot be shortened.

Who is responsible for the structural design?

A structural engineer. They design the foundations, columns, beams and slabs and determine the reinforcement quantity and concrete grade. Any structural change requires their approval.

What is structural handover?

An interim checkpoint where the structure is verified against the drawings before continuing to the envelope. Document it in a protocol with measurements – it is the chance to catch deviations while they are still cheap to fix.
