A balcony is exposed to rain and sun, and below it there is usually a living room. Faulty balcony waterproofing is one of the most common causes of damp ceilings, which makes this a stage you cannot compromise on.
Falls and drainage
A balcony must have correct falls towards the drain to prevent water pooling. Poor falls create standing water that penetrates through the tiling into the layers beneath. Planning the falls is the foundation of successful waterproofing.
Flood testing
After waterproofing and before tiling, a documented 24-48 hour flood test verifies there are no leaks. For us this is routine – it is what prevents surprises once the tiles are already laid.
Door thresholds and drains
The threshold between balcony and room, and the drainage points, are weak spots requiring particular attention. Correct detailing there prevents water ingress.
