Not every crack in a wall is cosmetic. Some are the result of normal shrinkage, others signal structural movement. Identifying the cause is what determines whether the repair will hold or reappear within a year.
Types of crack
Fine hairline cracks in plaster are usually shrinkage and are treated superficially. Diagonal cracks near openings, cracks that widen over time, or cracks that pass through structural elements require engineering assessment before any cosmetic repair.
Correct repair
Proper repair means opening the crack, cleaning it, applying a bonding primer, filling with a suitable flexible material and reinforcing with mesh where needed. Simply covering a crack with filler and paint hides it for one season.
Prevention
Reinforcing mesh at junctions between different materials, correct movement joints and quality plaster work substantially reduce future cracking.
